Just for info

I have a Allison MT647 Trans mated to 8.3 mechanical, what would be a upgrade if the time comes I need to replace my transmission?

Hey Stu,

I don't know it the MD3060 can be made to play mechanical but there are some guys doing 2000/2500 swaps as simply as adding a throttle position sensor.

I don't know much about it but these guys may: CAConversions

Also a lot of Allison swap info over at 4bts.net

I'm fairly certain the MD3060 was available with the mechanical 8.3, so it should be possible to swap one in.

That said, I have no idea what would actually be required to make it work.

What kind of upgrade are you looking to accomplish? The electronic allisons will give you an overdrive or two but you'll have to buy the control module, harness, shifter, and other associated bits to make it work, on top of the cost of the transmission.

The mt64x that you have is pretty good for skoolie service. If you find the need to swap I'd rebuild what you have or stick with the same model.

Just gathering some info so if/when time comes I need to replace or repair I know what my options are. But now the MT647 that's not a lockup converter is it? I havn't had opertunity yet to take it out & let it run.

Yes it locks up. I believe in both 3rd and 4th. It's similar to the mt643 but with a higher torque rating.
