need engine repair kit for 1990 navistar international. help!

Gonna have to fix engine on our home, and need help finding resources. My man can do the repairs himself, but we need to find some sort of repair kit for cheap, and honestly ANY information, manuals, etc we can find to get 'er done. Pretty sure a pistons shot... umm, any suggestions?

The rebuild kits are around $1200-$1500.

wghat engine is it? I have the full service manual set for the 1988-1992 Navistar truck / bus series... it has rebuild instructions for several engines in it..

More to the point, what is the problem? Symptoms? What could be a failing injector could lead a novice to think a piston is shot. $200 fix instead of an engine rebuild ....
