RE drive trains

Does a RE bus have a rear-end, or transaxle? Bus tops out at maybe 60mph and I would like a bit more just to avoid being hit from behind. I know tire sizes can make small differences, but I'm wondering if the gear ratio can be modified on RE drives and what all that entails. I don't want to go faster than 70mph but 65-70 seems like a good 'cruise' speed on open flat highway.

Thanks

Re: RE drive trains

It has a rear axle, just like a front engine bus but turned around to face the back. Changing out the rear would be the same as any other rear end.

Re: RE drive trains

Rear engine school buses are T drive configured just like opus said, and syke seconded. Those old GM highway buses are V drive, the engine runs across the back of the bus.

I wonder how the heck you could ever work on a V8 engine in one of those?

Re: RE drive trains

My dream bus is a GM pd4104. I think a 6-71 back there would be easy to work on. I'd want it turbo'd, with an automatic and power steering. If I couldn't find a quality converted one like that, which is probably darn near impossible, I'd stick with my RE skoolie.
