i made some progress today
alternator and tensioner pulley were removed and cleaned up. that let me get the belt off. i ordered a new belt, and got the alternator and pulley re-installed.
i started working on my broken stud but got frustrated and skunked. the drill bit broke off and i need another to finish.
here is the alternator with a wire i added for the tachometer. its attached to the stator and will be the signal wire for the tach.
even though you can't see it, here is the tensioner and the alternator back on the bus.
tomorrow, hoping for a new belt and to get that broken screw out of the block.

little by little.......got more done today!
here is the turbo, awaiting the new CHRA (Center Housing Rotating Assembly)
getting the turbo apart was a bugger. the exhaust side of the assembly was basically sealed in rust. once you have cursed the housing a few times, applied a band aid to your knuckles, and beat the crap out of it, the assembly just gives way and pops right out.
here is the turbo opened up and the new CHRA
and here is the new intake fan that spins freely, better than the old one.
and the turbo re-assembled...

Even though it was a pain to feet apart, it's nice when projects like that work out like they're supposed to.
Nothing broke and everything fit. I call that a win!

it ain't running yet!!!
i took a perfectly good, brand new exhaust manifold and put a hole in it.
tapped the hole and made a spot for my new pyrometer.
and rounding up the new goodies are the new gauges... pyro, trans temp, and tach!

i started having problems with my google pictures. i guess google doesn't support embedded images anymore. the url's of my pictures wouldn't work when i tried to insert them.
yesterday i found a work-around with google pictures.
when you have the option to share the pic, choose share and then "get link".
the work around is an web app called ctrlq.com
https://ctrlq.org/google/photos/
enter the "get link" result into the app and it will give you a working url to immbed with the picture icon.
hope that helps

I'm going to revive this thread a bit since i've had some problems.
earlier in this thread and others, i just replaced a water pump and belt in March. the first real trip was last week and i put on about 2000 since the new belt.
the trip was a disastor. 110 degree heat and overheating all the way. fan clutch went first. it was working and then the truck made a noise like i stuck a playing card in the spokes. turned out to be the fan clutch being eaten by its attachment brackets. the first overheating was shortly afterwards.
then the alternator gave out, just no charging, the battery slowly faded until night fall and i need lights. not enough juice for them to work. i charge the battery overnight and kept on.
if i paced myself easy, the truck ran fine.near the end of my destination, i got off the flat interstate and was climbing an arizona mountain grade.
the water pump bearings were trashed and i just replace them the next day. the alternator broke (not charging) and i just destroyed my fan clutch.
i feel this is all belt related. wrong to only get 1500 miles on waterpump.
if anything, the belt replacement is a bit longer than than the original.
any clues or suggestions?

Sounds a bit like a way over tightened belt. They can wreck anything it turns.

ifthe fan clutch went out of balance and you kept running it with a locked and out of balance fan clutch that will easily trash the water pump bearings.. .. an out of baance fan or one with a partially missing blade will do that too.. ..
if your belt is auto tensioned. and the tensioner seems like it moves freely.. (I think this has a SERP belt?).. then look to an accessory that drags hard.. if an accessory near the beginning of the belt drive drags hard.. it puts undue pressure on other accessories in line(ahead) with it...

thanks for the insight.
i was thinking it sounded like to tight of a belt but that just doesnt make sense. i was unable to get a smaller belt on the rig, the next size larger is too slack for the tensioner.
at this point, the tensioner and the main pulley are the only 2 not being replaced. the fan looks fine. but after a portion of the fanclutch was sheared off, it was probably out of balance.
it was probably out of balance to allow it to be sheared?
idk
i think this time however i will pull the radiator and repair the fan from the front instead of the laying on top hugging the valve covers.
i just crawled underneath the bus for a quick inspection and man, i hit something on the transmission pan hard! it looks like the bus landed on a 1/2" pipe. the drain pan is pushed in an inch or so with a clear imprint of what ever hit it. the wound is up and down and not dragging.
the front axle is right behind and much lower than the transmission and nothing touched the axle.

I can tell you what happened to me: Idler pulley seemed to wobble a little so i changed that. Wasnt the problem. had other belt and related issues which greatly irritated me. Finally discovered the problem was the water pump bearing and i was so glad i found it at home and not beside the road... Like is mentioned earlier by others, Check everything belt related and use the proper belts...

sure sounds alot like road debris.. possibly got up in and maybe bent or dhipped a blade or two on the fan.. be sure to check it for balance before you put it back on.

grrr, its new damage. i was looking at the pan thinking i would swap it onto my new 1545 transmission if it would fit. this is a deep pan compared to what is on the trans in the crate.
aye carumba, i need to go find my my ratchet and cheater bar i used on the belt tensioner. if this is self inflicted.........

wonder if the deep pan from the AT545 I just took out of my bus would fit your 1545...
I had the deep pan with the dipstick into the side.
