For example I can climb the east side of Monteagle mountain on I 24 in TN heading west and maintain 45-50 MPH the whole way up. The speed limit is only 55 there and some curves have advisories of 45.

Grade question.

Hello everyone,
I had a quick question about going up some grades. We have a bluebird tc2000 with a 5.9L Cummins 12v. I drove it up some steep grades on white pass in Washington. It did fine and I would control the rpm with my foot and not let it shift into 4th gear. I was wondering if it did shift could I manually shift it down to 3 without hurting anything. It is an automatic transmission and I didn’t just want to grab it and take it to 3 without knowing for sure. I read through the comments and didn’t see an answer to my question but it totally could have been answered and I just did not understand the verbiage lol. Thanks for the help! I hope everyone has a good day!

I know it's an old tread but if it were my bus I would change the fuel filters and then inspect the air filter and exhaust system for restrictions. Then I would find out how much fuel pressure it had on the lift pump side and check it with the engine manufacturers spec. If it fails to have proper fuel pressure I would check the amount of vacuum it has on the suction side of the lift pump if it is high you have a fuel restriction and if it is low it can be one of two things a bad pump or an air leak in the system usually an air leak will be accompanied with hard to start issues.

So my slowest yet is up a 8 mile paved road to a campground up in an Alaskan State Park last week...10mph. I was terrified, thinking AT WHAT POINT is a HILL TOO STEEP so The Bus stops!!! (and rolls backwards!!)

Have new fuel filters, bus runs great. Eklutna Lake outside Anchorage
