Transmission care and longivity

Most bus makers install a large trans oil filter. Changing this filter in a timely fashion is required for a long lasting good operating unit. Some bus makers include a transmission cooler, which usually is connected to the engine coolant. My preference is to not interconnect between the trans and engine. If either system overheats, the other temp will rise. A trans temp gage is a very important tool on buses with any engine. The most accurite gage is the mechanical types that indicate the present temp after the key is off. A nice method of determining the trans temps is to install an electrical temp gage with 2 senders, before and after any trans cooler. With a single pole double throw switch wired to the single gage, both temps can be compared or noticed. The larger the gage, the easier to notice. There are sensors that can turn on a lite when a high temp occurs. Frank

Re: Transmission care

The magnets in a trans are good except most trans of today have aluminum oil pans. Next best thing is to tape some magnets on an external oil filter. Some guys cut the filters and check any metal. Frank
