Who owns a Gillig or Crown with a pancake engine.

I am curious what the different options were for powerplants for the midship engines. I know about the Cummins but what else was used?

Wish my 69 was a 6-71 pancake, but it's a Cat 3208 V8 in the rear, with the upside down shift pattern

Large diesel engines...

Most all large diesel engines can be changed for another maker. Many school bus owners change to an engine they know/like. All engines are not created equal. A Cat 3208 is considered an auto engine that does not have replaceable liners. A conventional Cat, Cummins, Detroit upright engine be installed in most vehicles. All Allison auto trans can be connected to about any engine. The single biggest difference in the engines is weight, and horse power. I am a big fan of the International 466T. I want/need one for my Blue Bird/Int bus. Hint...Hint.. My 7.3l runs great with 2 new heads, but just a bit under powered for my wants. Any "pancake" engine can be converted back to an upright engine with the correct oil pan and oil pump. Frank

Mine has the Detroit 6-71 in it, but Cummins 220's were often also used at the time my bus was manufactured. I like them both...right now 314,000 miles on the DD and she runs fine...everything hinges on good maintenance over the life of the engine

WOW!! That is some crazy looking engine. It looks like it should be powering a space ship or a power plant for electricity.

What is that thing?

What are you talking about? Chrome makes you go faster! Learned that in High School.

Rich
You see Chrome, being highly polished, allows air to slip past it far easier than other metals. This being the case Chrome makes ANY vehicle faster AND more fuel efficient. Haven't you ever wondered why everything in the 50's dripped chrome? In the 50's they put Chrome on all bumpers, around all lights and windows, heck even a couple lines down the side of the vehicle just for good measure. You never know where Chrome may help, that's why every home decor item in 50's was chromed, that little strip at the table was just right to keep elbows from sticking on a hot day. Motto in the 50's was "Of course it needs more Chrome!" And why not? I bet if we were to Chrome a bus it would get 50 MPG at 100 MPH, and as an added bonus it would blind everyone for miles! Of course this is just my opinion, some wind tunnel testing MAY be needed to confirm.... Just sayin'.....
and a Skoolie being yellow under all the chrome would be doubleeeeee fast

Re: Who owns a Gillig or Crown with a pancake engine.

It's been a while since I posted the question. A buddy said his engine is toast. I haven't spoken with him for a while. I was wondering what the different engine came in a mid engine Gillig.
