Williams controls air throttle

This morning I was trying to start a cross country drive but was halted due to a small rubber boot. I was able to find one and pay to have it overnighted at great expense (fingers crossed it's the right part, should be here tomorrow). Apparently it's a discontinued part.

Has anyone else had any trouble with the air throttle leaking?

Is there a replacement assembly that can be installed to alleviate any future complications?

Kinda hard to see but the boot is split near the top of the plunger

Where did you go to get help for your Williams Air Control Throttle parts?

These people should be able to help you with whatever you need.

I tried all the local heavy truck parts suppliers/bus garages but no luck. Most said they've never seen anything like it. I ended finding the part number in a catalog I found online. The part wasn't expensive but the next day Saturday shipping was insane.

I'll keep that link bookmarked for future reference. Maybe I'll try and find a spare boot to keep just in case.

If you anticipate it failing again that would be a smart move, you may not be able to get one at all later. Maybe grab a couple if the normal shipping is reasonable.

That is just a boot to keep the dirt out, it won't fix the problem. They aren't hard to rebuild, you just need a rebuild kit. The Williams part # for the complete rebuild kit is 117103. Just did a quick search and found one here
Williams Controls 117103 Repair Kit

This kit MIGHT have the o-rings you need Williams Controls Air Throttle Repair Kit Part 117612 | eBay

If I remember correctly all of the valves that look like that take the same repair kit. Do your own research, I did one last spring and all of the info I needed is available on the net.

Dick, unfortunately your 100% correct about it being a dust boot. Kicking myself for overnighting a dust boot. Guess I'm stuck here for a few more days.

The rebuild kit you linked looks like it's for the engine side.

I have a wm90 series throttle. Not sure what model of the wm90 I have though. Does anybody know how to to tell the different models apart or what typically comes in buses. I have a 91 Thomas saf t liner if that helps. The repair kit part number appears to be r90. If it's not a whole lot more I think I'd rather buy a complete valve, to be certain it works.

I'm thinking I have 111301. Type 2 with a modulating pressure range of 0-120 psi. Can anyone confirm this?

There's also the wm90dx but I don't think I have this, the internals look a little different.

My bad on the ebay link.

Here is a link to the info I used to order mine. It's a Williams publication
www.dsf-technologies.com/upload/proddocspdf/proddocspdf_2_643.pdf

According to it the 90 series take the 117103 repair kit the 476 series also take the same kit. I also have a 90 series. Our buses are the same year, different manufacture.

The 453 series take a different kit.

Thanks Dick. I'll give brakesystemsinc a call on Monday to see if can get a kit by Tuesday.

I noticed in the brake systems Inc catalog it mentions the r90 being the part number for the repair kit for the regular 90 series and the 117103 is listed under the wm90dx fail safe version. But in the link you sent me 117103 is listed for both the fail safe and the regular assemblies

Dick Couple questions for you. Do you remember what model of the 90 series you have? And the repair kit said it includes the barrier plate assembly, does this come pre assembled?

Thanks
Nate

I don't really remember the model, I looked through my notes and couldn't find it.

If I remember right the barrier plate is pre assembled. Here's a pic of the kit.

That kit looks like it has everything I need. I'll have to call around some places tomorrow to get a price. I did find a complete valve assembly for $175 shipped overnight.

Just ordered a whole throttle assembly, which includes a new valve. Part number was 116731. Should be here in the morning.

It was only $50 more than the repair kit (117103) and the same price as just the wm90dx valve (116697) so figured might as well replace the whole thing.

Since we're on the subject of air throttle's, when driving my bus I notice that when driving at slower speed say around 30 or so the rpm's surges but at highway speed WOT the rpm hold study.

Can't say I noticed anything abnormal with mine. Just one day out of the blue it was leaking air.

Thanks for all the help. The new throttle arrived a day late but finally got me on the road. Then 80 miles later my alternator gave up but luckily a shop not too far away had a new one.

this sounds reminiscent of my trip home with my Carpenter, where the air compressor gave up 450 miles into my Journey.. and the incompetent service people getting the wrong parts..

then my alternator started acting wierd toward the end of the trip.. and a month after I changed it because it seemed to be strange..

what I can say is that ive run somewhere close to 10,000 miles maybe more since thatfirst trip.. and all have been trouble-free except when I busted an A/C belt.. which was my own fault fornot using a heavy enough belt when I installed the A/C..

I learned a ton about that bus and fixing the breakdowns gave me confidence in driving it anywhere..

I am a HUGE proponent of a decent road trip with a new purchase before tearing it completely apart to convert it.. mainly because it helps you to learn whether the bus is going to be a good fit and identifies things you may need / want to do during conversion..
