Wiring Issues....

Got the New Bus Home...1997 thomas MVP Pusher 8.3 Cummins Allison 6 speed Auto....

So I opened the Panel up at the driver side Front Side of Bus where ALL THE WIRES are......WOW what a Mess.....lol

Everything looks to be in its Proper place, but I have one big issue....

I have had a Critter get in and CHEW the red wire and yellow wire off this Unit...they are still connected and appear to be functional, but the critter ate all the shielding off.. Pics will show the damage....I originally thought it had gotten hot and Melted, but the wire strands are all ok....and no heat marks or Damage....all chew damage...lol

So from these pics, can anyone tell me what this unit is and does...So I can Then Chase or clean it up...It looks Like I have PLENTY of Extra wire inside the grey Shielded cover this is coming from.....

This is the unit the red Wire is bolted to.....???

Yellow Wire is Scotch locked ( I HATE SCOTCH LOCKS ) to a Red Power lead I believe....I have not key tested with probe yet....

Both red and Yellow are part of a 5-6 wire loom inside the grey Sheilded Cover...and there is a Second Grey 2 Wire Black and White both appear to head to the rear of the Bus....???

Thanks For any Info Guys...

That is a solenoid. Lower amperage (the smaller wires) come from the ignition. It energized an electromagnet allowing connection between a higher amperage load. On my bus, I have a solenoid like that that connects my house batteries to the start batteries. Originally it was the connection between the stock Ford electrical system + everything the body mfgr. added.

Interesting how they only ate the two colors! <not to self - be cautious and check condition of red and yellow wires regularly.>

Don't know what it's for exactly, but a quick google shows a lot of heating/cooling companies if that helps narrow things down.

It could be one of your starter solenoids. Like sdwarf36 mentioned.

I would just disconnect the battery, trace the wires, and replace with the same size wire or bigger, and all the proper color.

When you get the wires replaced I would stuff a couple of Bounce clothes dryer
sheets in that area to repel any further rodent incursions. Rodents don't like the
strong smell of the sheets and they are good for 6 months. Another item that
works well is peppermint oil, which also works for spiders and rodents for 6 mo.
