Ford 429

Any opinions on the ford 429? I've driven a 366 and have a 330 in my bus. How does it do in comparison to diesels?

More power than the 366 or 330-no comparision to the diesels.

Re: Ford 429

I figured the 429 would do ok compared to a dt360 or cummins. My 330 does about as well as my friend's 366 bus. The hills in my area are pretty tough on the old gasser, knocks me down to 30-40 mph pulling about 6k. It drops from 55 to 50 with no trailer. The reason I asked is I saw a nice finished skoolie in the area with a 429 crate motor.

Not necessarily true. A small motor working really hard, will many times get worse mileage than the big motor.
I think with the right gearing a 429 would be a good engine for a skoolie.
With a nice set of headers and some chrome sewer pipe side pipes. It sure could be made to "talk" to you.

Yea, I know the engines in the back. I took some artistic liberty,OK?

That pic is cracking me up!

It's hard to find reliable info about the 429 online. Im looking at 1985 ford B600 with the 429 in an 30' all aluminum body. Would love to hear some more opinions about this motor and if it's worth going gas with the lighter body.

They were good engines, a bit thirsty. The ones I had got same mileage empty or loaded.

That was a fast response for a thread resurrected from the dead. What kind of mileage are you talking about getting? Most of my trips are going to be in the 1-3k mile round trip range so Im considering gas costs more seriously as a primary factor. Thanks for the response and link

Seems like 8 or so, it's been a long time. Not a bus, F350 truck hauling cattle.

From what I remember 8 mpg was pretty good. Some really lucky guys reported as much as 11 mpg, and others reported 6 mpg. The odd part was they always got the same mileage, loaded or unloaded.

Just bought an '86 B-series with a 4V 429. Drove it back east from CO. Ran like a champ, and cruised very comfortably at 60-65. Hit a couple good inclines in PA, and it didn't skip a beat. It's an empty shell and I got close to 10mpg. I like the gas engine in this thing. It's 35' long with a 16" roof raise. We don't plan to do much long, cross-country type driving with our bus. It will mostly only drive 3 hours a day when we travel. I'm familiar with gas engine as well, which makes me feel more comfortable doing work on it myself to save money.
