Oil All Over My Wheel

Hello my skoolie mechanical gurus.

There is thick sludgy oil all over my passenger side front wheel. I looked underneath and the axle has quite a bit of oil on it too. Here are some photos.

What kind of hell am I in for now?

Totally not coming from the wheel. You have a oil leak up higher and it's leaking bad. Could possibly be coming from the oil cooler? I had a small external oil leak on mine, but it also failed internally. Yours should be similar to mine. Look in that area........

The oil on the axle is probably from the engine somewhere rather than from the wheel. On the other hand, the grease on the outside of the wheel looks like it is escaping from the hub cap and could be from an over packed wheel bearing, a bearing getting hot or just from a damaged hub cap. Jack up the wheel and check for looseness and smooth rotation and go from there. Overall from what the pics show I don't see anything too unexpected on an old bus--but check it out anyway. If the engine is leaking oil there could always be the possibility of a fire to follow so that leak should be studied too.

Thanks, and GREAT CHANNEL - I just subscribed.

I started one about a week ago. Nothing like yours, though... More me fumbling through a bunch of stuff I don't know how to do. I've only posted one episode so far. I'll put a link to it here once there's maybe more of a reason to subscribe.

As far as the leak goes, I have been looking for a small leak since I have a little spot on the ground every time I park, but it never occurred to me it would be leaking sort of sideways like this. Will check it out.

Oil leaks can travel far from their origin source. Usually the smell and color will be your biggest clues to identifying your leak source.
