Stuck yoke
Hello all,
Found a partially covered 99 E350 Collins 5window bus for sale with 150K. But, the thing is, the seller says that his reason for selling was he was thinking about upsizing for a while. He tried to replace the transmission output shaft seal and couldn't get the slip yoke out, and rather than figure out what's wrong he decided to cut his losses and sell it. Anybody heard of this/had it happen to them?

something really screwy here as the yoke must move back and forth to accommodate the travel of the rear axle moving up and down and other movement from torque find a local mechanic and ask how much to remove this stuck yoke or run

Something screwy indeed.
Unbolt the driveshaft & slid out of the transmission. It may have a slight vacuum seal due to the fluid leak. But my guess is the real real reason he's selling it is because all the fliud leaked out & ruined the transmission.
Easy way to find out is a test drive. Bolt everything back up, buy the fluid yourself if you have to & drive it.

OK, so assume the transmission is bad. Offer him his price less 1/2 the cost of a new transmission. Turn your old transmissin in as a core on a rebuilt and you have a bus with a good-as-new transmission.

I've actually had this happen. My ujoint went bad, so I had to pull the driveshaft. The seal around the slip yoke was the wrong size, or put on with a 5lb sledge cockeyed or something screwy. I beat the driveshaft out with a deadblow and put a new seal on it. It did still go in a little tight though.

Get the price down as low as you can, and then fix that transmission. That would be cool if it were only low on fluid with a bad seal.

I remeber paying around $2200.00 for rebuilt E4OD's about 15 yrs ago

This could be my bus! Same year , make and miles and problem. I can't get that yoke out of the output shaft ! Tried everything I can think of. Anybody have any suggestions? If I can't sell it broken I am considering taking it to a shop , getting it fixed and using it again.

The '99 E-350 should have a 4R100 trans. Rebuilds are available for about the same price as the E40D.

Installed an E4OD is going to cost about $3K.
Spend the extra for one of the re-engineered E4OD/4R100 transmissions that are set up to work behind one of the monster trucks running 400+ HP. In your bus with only 200 HP it will most likely last a bit longer than the OEM's did in those buses.

It sounds like everyone is pretty sure I need a new transmission. Any chance it's not ruined? Is possible to replace just the output shaft and slip yoke?
