Transmission...

Just found the tag on my transmission when I was trying to figure out why my speedometer wasn't working. It is a Clark 285V72. I have never heard of this transmission. Is it a good one? And I did manage to find out why my speedometer wasn't working....the part of the speedo cable that goes into the transmission was rounded off. I took the end off, mig welded some metal in and ground it back to the original square shape. I then lubed the cable really well and put it all back together.

Re: Transmission...

They are standout transmission. A lot of the fourwheeling guys have swapped them because they give you a crawler first gear and yours *should* have an overdrive 5th, not direct I believe. Guys that do swaps to diesels or are playing around with 2.5 and 5 ton military trucks gobble them up. The only downside I've heard is that parts just don't exist anymore so rebuilding it can be tough, but the point is kind of moot if you never have to do it. What's the shift pattern? Do either of these look correct?

2 4 R
3 5 1

2 5 R
3 4 1

Re: Transmission...

The shift pattern is:

R 2 4
1 3 5

I agree, the ratio in 1st is extreme, I can pretty much redline the thing in 1st and casually walk past it!
Reverse and 1st aren't synchronized, but it is really easy to just start in 2nd and go from there. In fact 2nd is also a pretty low ratio. The jump from 4th to 5th on the other hand seems like quite a wide jump and if I don't get the rpm's in 4th up over 3000-3500, when I shift to 5th I end up lugging along at 2000 or so and it takes a while to finish getting up to highway speeds (3500 rpm).

Of course all this is just my experience so far. I have since recurved the distributor and advanced the timing to a more appropriate level for running with propane, so I will need to take it out for another test run to see if my bottom end torque had improved. It should, because I lightened the springs and now I get full advance by 2250 rpms.
