Exclamation We owned it for an hour...

...Parked it once and now it won't move. It starts, you can rev the engine, everything seems fine until you try to put it in gear. If you take your foot off the brake and try to accelerate, it just rolls backwards. Any ideas???

Also, if anyone is in the Denver metro area and would be willing to take a look at it, we would definitely be willing to pay you!! Thanks!!!

Ha! Thanks. At least I think I do
Assuming its an automatic, Id check the shift lever cable/linkage from the selector lever to the transmission. Sounds like its not getting into gear, esp if its hapenning in all gears you try to select. Crawl under there and look!

It is a 5-speed Hi/Low manual transmission, 4x2, 370 cu. in.

So you put it into gear, and when you release the clutch, nothing happens?
Maybe your clutch is somehow comepletely ruined, or its slipping at the differential?
Im not familiar with 2 speed rear ends so that may not be possible.
Have someone look at the driveshaft while you have it in gear and try to drive away. If the driveshaft spins but the wheels dont turn, its the 2 speed rear end. If you get it in gear, let out the clutch, and the driveshaft doesnt spin, then its either the clutch, which would be weird, or the gear shift linkage not getting the trans into gear.

Id fiddle with the hi/lo selector and see if you can look at the shifter linkage. Does it feel like its going into gear?
I have a feeling this will be real easy/cheap or real expensive and require a shop's help

I've had nightmares with shift linkage before.
Its the bane of old vw's.

Excellent advice, Charles.
BTW- that's my name as well. But everyone calls me Charlie or CB.

Sounds like clutch/shift issues then. Power isn't getting to the driveshaft/rear axle.

Perhaps the slave cylinder is stuck out so the pressure plate is not actually engaging the flywheel?
