Your thoughts on 428 gasser

Hi I just found a ok bus for sale. It's a 1986 Ford with a 428 gas and a stick. Is it worth my time or is diesel the only way to go? Thanks for the input.

I had a 40 foot 80's ford gasser. Man did it suck down the fuel. Rode like a brick too.
Take it for a drive and see if you like it.
How big is it?

Same size guy said it got about 8mpg but handled hills in PA. good. What could I expect from a 466 or a 7.3?

MPG's are just part of the story. If that 428 has not been rebuilt since '86, it is very likely on its' last legs. Typical diesel will be good for 4-500K miles with reasonable maintenance.

One big difference is torque. That's what moves mass. A gasser will have to work a WHOLE lot harder than a diesel to move the same load due to the large difference in the toque each puts out. Cubic inch for cubic inch, a diesel will create much more torque.

Example:
My little four cylinder Cummins currently makes a little over 350 pounds of torque. The eight cylinder 428 makes 390. Mildly tuned 6 banger Cummins routinely put out 600 pounds and can get 12-14 mpg.

There are lots of very good reasons virtually every large, commercial vehicle on the road is diesel powered.

Yeah I know a diesel is what I would like. A 466 I think is what I really would like. But this thing was 1500.00 and it's in good shape for the year. Guess I'll keep looking. Thanks.

Mine was a 370 and only got 3-4 mpg.
with a DT466 in a 40 footer you could expect 7-10.
