insides of 6-71

Taking apart a 6-71 for overhaul. These are my pictures. A friend of mine took a lot of detail pictures I have not seen yet. Just thought those of you who have Detroit's would like seeing some piston and liners. The row of ports you see is for fresh air to be blown in when the piston uncovers them. Oh the cookies are needed to keep everyone happy.

Don't have to fret about valve lash on a two-stroke...that and they sound sooooo good!

This is one of a pair connected with a generator between them. So 12 cylinders of screaming jimmy. Sounds great at full power.

2 stroke detriots have exhaust valves, so yes you have to worry about valve lash

If you could record them running together, it would make a nice addition to this thread!

What's the red thing hiding in the corner?

Plymouth, Porter, or Vulcan?

Davenport 25 ton. Had a cat D17000 originally and when it broke the crankshaft, we replaced it with a 3406 cat. Has a 4 speed manual trans. This has been and still is a very reliable loco for us.

Latest on the rebuild. Have the liner and pistons in and shimmed to the correct height. Not the best picture but here is the head being lowered into the locomotive.

One cylinder bore needed just a light hone for the liner to fit to proper clearance. Just a note the oil rings are a three price set. An expander and two very thin rings for each ring groove. It is very easy for the expander to get overlapped, and then they will compress but not enough to go into the liner. So final step before loading them in the liner, is to check the expander for proper position.

By the way the Pistons with rods attached are loaded into the liners from the bottom, then the whole assembly dropped into the block.
