Need info on Detroit 6.5l

I have my eye on a shorty carpenter-style body with a Detroit 6.5l and ~140k miles, 1995. The bus is otherwise in great shape. Dealer is asking $1k and it does start, drive, stop.

I've been reading about the engine in truck/pickup forums and it has folks very polarized as best as I can tell. Some folks say they'll run forever with some mods and others say run away quick!

With regards to our beloved busses, how does it stack up? Should I pass? I'm looking for a rig that I can put a lot of travel miles on. It's on hold for a week but I haven't signed or paid so I can still walk no problem.

Opinions, please!

6.5

I am from Bonney Lake Wa. and I may have some answers. I own two minibirds one with a 6.2 and one with a 6.5. The price is good if the rest is ok! They use the motor in army Humvee's along with early chevy pu and suburbans. The military is scrapping the Humvee so a bunch of parts will be in the used market. My busses are on a chevy p30 chassis step Van and they look like a step van but wider. Also that guy in Winlock is a general bus brain! Let me know what you need
