I have two DD Engines- two things - When it starts (it will). Do NOT GOOSE it. Let it idle for a long time. Oil will settle into the blower side of the intake and it will smoke like crazy- let it do its thing. Idle until all oil is forced to all the places it should go.
2 nd thing. Have a means to choke off its air supply should it start running on. Heavy jacket is what I used. These engines are work horses, fresh oil and clean filters!

Only 40 weight is recommended according to this one.




50 in high temperatures over 100F ambient


15w-40 or 30w only in very cold applications from 0 to -25F and never in marine applications.

Thanks, I like facts from manuals. It is interesting they changed from straight 40 to 15w40(as my manual shows) then back again.

Marine applications usually run the engine near full power for long times, and often do not see cold conditions at least not in the boat, so cold weather flow at start up is not normally a concern.

My application is railroad and mine see a lot of idling time, of course set at high idle. I do also have many differant brands of engines so keeping separate oil for each engine would be a nightmare. Found one of the guys putting journal oil in an engine. Yuck this is straight 20w with a tachiness additive.

in a bus theres a good chance depending on how its geared that it will be running at close to max RPM for extended periods of time..



one of the things we had to deal with in racing is oil foaming.. some of the newer detergent oils have a tendency to foam when they turn into a fine mist under high load higher RPM conditions.. granted we were spinning engines north of 6000 RPM.. but still the potential exists and is something to think about when looking for oils that are going to run extended periods of time at higher RPM / high load.

I have not changed the oil on my Crown yet and started looking around for SAE 40 CF-II oil. Tractor Supply has Shell ROTELLA T1 SAE 40 (CF/CF-2) Heavy-Duty Diesel Engine Oil for 14.99 a gallon. Anyone use Rotella for this?

Sadly I don't own a DD two stroke anymore.

Rotella T1 is good. I bought nine gallons of it when NAPA had it on sale a few months ago. Delo 100 is favored because it has the lowest sulfated ash content, but any CF-2 oil is OK, especially because we're not driving the high annual mileages that commercial operators rack up.

Both are quality oils flee from traveler oils. But with the DRIPTRIOT you might consider getting a lot of it. Cheers

that happens as you get older - what happened 'a couple of months ago' turns out to be a year ago - time flies faster and faster the older you get
