1995 Dt 466 w/545 trans

What oil pressure is considered normal for these engines? What manual would I need to guide me through a rear main seal job

Normal is at least 20 pounds at idle. Generally, they will run around 60lbs going down the highway. There's some great books and DVD's on ebay. A rear main isn't too difficult(besides the trouble of getting to it), and is just a 1 piece metal clad seal.

Look close once you get in there. There's also a rear cam seal that's part of the block/transmission adapter. The block adapter also has a sealing surface, which could leak too.

I have had this bus for about four weeks now and I am just going through its bugs. I thought I had the leak fixed by replacing a leaking Trans line. But no, 15 year old rubber parts are the first things to get replaced. This thing will only leak engine oil if I take it out on say a 60 mile trip and get it up and warm. Then when I get it back home it has a WELL oiled front axle and all back to about mid ship...It is leaking oil out the bellhousing hole only to confirm that I will get to know my engine so much better now. So this Saturday looks like trannie pulling and coffee to start the morning off. I figure it will be a good time to change the trans front seal while there as well.
In taking out this rear seal and installing are there special tools that will be worth gold? I can't see setting killing a seal kit with the wrong pipe size. The kit alone from the dealer is about 170.00. Still cheaper than sending it out.

Hey Nevrenufhp,
I have reached the point of re-assembly almost...You were right on about checking the rear cam seal, it was weeping as well. The only thing I need help with for now until my parts come in is the wear sleeve. What way would you remove it from the crank?

If it has a wear sleeve on it now, you shouldnt have to replace it unless it has a groove or other wear in it. To remove, try a claw hammer or a couple small hook-like pry bars. Maybe even a screwdriver could work if nothing else.

Nevrenufhp,
So I now have the parts to complete the job. My question is on the new main seal kit, The seal that presses into the cast aluminum seal retainer on the back of the engine...it has the seal with the new wear sleeve inside of the seal, there is also a black rubber ring that sits on the outside of the seal. This ring looks as if it holds the wear sleeve in that seal possibly for shipping reasons? Or does this black ring stay on there when I install it?

If it's a micro thin layer of rubber, then yes, it should stay there. It helps seal the outer part of the seal.
