466 or 466E?

I was wondering what is more popular among people wanting to do skoolie conversions. The International 466 is quite a sought after engine. The question is....

Is the 466E (electronic) just as popular?

Re: 466 or 466E?

I got a 466 specifically because I did not want electronic injection. For me the reason is ease and affordability of maintenance and also the fact that I'm doing a veggie oil conversion. I could replace all 6 of my injectors for the price of a single electronic injector.

Yeah, I'm on the same page as you as far as that goes. I would prefer all mechanical myself. But there was none of those on the lot. I couldn't really pass up the price.

neither....5.9 12valve Cummins

Sorry...biased

if you have a choice, mechanical is more user friendly.

I have a 466e(powerstroke). It's my second one and I still prefer the mechanical "true" diesel(no glow plugs).

Until I got my bus I had never heard of a diesel engine with no glow plugs. I've got an old Mercedes diesel and an old Ford F250 diesel both of which use glow plugs. Does anyone know why it is certain diesels need them and others don't? Truthfully, I'm a little worried about my bus not starting if I'm boondocking somewhere in cold weather and don't have an outlet handy to plug in the block heater. My bus actually has an ether container built in with a button on the dash to give it a squirt, but it doesn't look like it still works. I guess I could carry starting fluid around, but it seems like a hassle.

Re: 466 or 466E?

A DT466E isn't a powerstroke, that's a T444E. Only the 04.5 & newer 466's have an intake heater, no glow plugs. The older mechanical ones are as reliable as dirt. They generally start up fine down to around 0*f. But below 30* it's best to plug em in with a block heater. For a few years, the 466 shared almost the same P-pump (injector pump) as the biased Cummins 6BT/5.9
You can run a mechanical 466 to 500k miles for pennies in repairs compared to fat dollars of a 466E.

Re: 466 or 466E?

I hear ya on the cummins 5.9. I just hope I don't have any electronic issues I need to deal with down the road.
