backup light wire?

Where does the backup wire come from on my 88 front engine bluebird IH? I can't seem to trace it. Does it come from behind the shifter or from the tranny? I found two wires from the tranny that run up to the firewall. One wire that runs from the lights goes somewhere into a cluster at the firewall. I can't tell where it goes. My backup lights don't work. I did put it in reverse with the key on and test wires. Nothing lead me to an answer.
thanks for any hints.
