Chipping the engine

Just curious if anyone has added a controllable chip on their engine? I have experience with the "EDGE" which I added to my 2001 Cummins 2500 4x4.. The number of advances on the fly are five. The 0 position is factory stock. The #1 is towing. This is a marked improvement in performance as the advance timing creates a snappy response and a lot more power. The next three positions will continue to increase to balls out full race. I really don't use these as my pocketbook is to thin for replacing tires and tranny. The note here I will make is that factory Cummins before chiping is detuned. Specifically I would say for fuel economy.
The advantage of Chipping the engine would be for hill climbs or entering the freeway where the extra power would be needed.
For a couple of years now I have watched videos on builds and lurked on websites but never seen anything about chipping the engine.

Im looking at doing some work to my DT466E. Ive talked to the local Navistar dealer and will be going from 215hp to 230hp, then changing the injectors, adding an HX40W turbo and water meth injection. I want to do this for the hill climbs around the west. Lots of mountain passes here. Ill be doing all the work myself except the retune which will be donw at the dealer.
