interesting... ive seen Tow drivers reconnect them on trucks.. I suppose when it goes to a shop like EC says they are lazy and figure the shop will reconnect it.

with the driveshaft off is actuallty a good way to play with the trans and see if it makes any power.. you can engage it and see if the yoke spins..

but the fact the reverse lights didnt come on indicates a pressure problem someplace..

-Christopher

EDIT - thats assuming they dropped the shaft completely at both ends..

He removed the back section completely. Even with the selector in N, the front part spun very slowly. He said that was normal...

yep thats normal... that means the input shaft spline didnt break... with all the clutch packs diengage the fluid will still have some resistance and allow the output shaft to spin slowly.. if you engage it and it spins faster then it means the transmission is trying to shift and operate.. doesnt mean it has any holding power just means the hydraulics have some type of pressure...

Ahhh, OK.

Fluid looks and smells OK. Nice and clean and doesn't smell burnt.

I cranked the bus and shifted it into gear and it seemed to engage the transmission for a moment. Still wouldn't engage in reverse, though. After shifting in and out of gear 2 or 3 times, it stopped engaging altogether again...

ice cold fluid runs at a little higher pressure... once it starts to warm up a little it starts to thin out..

doesnt sound too great right now for that transmission.. there is some hope though//

if its something easy for the shop like a broken relief spring or stuck valve.. valve body related stuff can often be handled without pulliung the transmission out.. the pink fluid bodes well for it not being a burnt up clutch

hoping its something simple!!

So, looks like I'll be getting an upgrade! Gonna go to Phoenix tomorrow to get a 643 and have them swap it out. If I'm gonna spend money for a rebuilt tranny, might as well go for the 643!

are you going to get one that has all the proper adapter rings, cross member, and the like?

also it weighs 650 lbs,, not sure what you are going to haul it in, but id suggest a pickup truck..

cant wait to see the swap take shape!! i love custom built busses!!

Yea, I'll make sure to get all the right parts to do it correctly. The shop here said they can do the remove/install if I provide them the parts... we'll see how today goes!

Well, couldn't get the tranny today but will pick it up Thursday. Getting one from an International dealer. A little pricey, but I want a warranty and a tranny I can trust for years and years. I have a shop here in Quartzsite that will put it in for me and won't break the bank. They'll be able to adjust the driveshaft and take care of any crossmembers needed.

Hopefully can be back to it by the weekend? We shall see... I'll keep ya posted.

Just got it towed to a shop in Quartzsite, but they don't open until Monday... at least we have the car and can go hang out...

You're REALLY gonna appreciate that upgrade, I promise!
You'll get better mpg's, run cooler, and have a lot more confidence with real engine braking while making steep descents.
For a shop, this is an easy job and they're likely gonna have ya fixed and ready to go in a short time!

be sure to also look into any converter spacer rings you may need.. also crawl under your bus and make sure the current transmission is connected to an SAE-2 to SAE3 adapter ring on the flywheel housing..

you'll notice an inner ring of bolts which which goes to the AT545 bell and then an outer ring of bolts partially visible that goes into the flywheel housing..

this is important because with the 643 you'll pull the AT545 off then pull that ring off.. which will give you an SAE2 housing... if that ring isnt present then you have a straight SAE3 housing.. (not likely.. but was done on some {for some odd reason})..

then you'll need a different hub pilot spacer for the flywheel because now your transmission will be forward slightly.. you also may need a different converter spacer ring (if one was in use).. which handles any distance of the converter to the flywheel..

best thing to do is see if anyone on the forum has a DT-466E with a 643 and then get their VIN so the navistar dealer can run the VIN and see what auxilliary parts are necessary...

I dont have the answers for the 643. as i went straight to the 1000 for overdrive when my 545 died.. more electronics required but all my spacer rings and hub fit right on, shift linkage was a pretty easy swap.. weight was the same as my 545

Had to crawl under there tonight to get some info off the data plate...there is a converter ring. The Allison guy is calling me in the AM and I will make sure that we get all the bits we need!

Thanks!

Still waiting for the transmission... It is apparently coming from Grand Rapids, MI... will be in Phoenix Monday, and I'll grab a trailer and take it to the shop here in Quartzsite to get it put in. Just really tired of being in a parking lot in front of the shop. At least they let us use an extension cord to plug in and we also have our car so we're mobile. I'm just ready to get back on the road!
We have been able to go to Skooliepalooza and hang out which has been nice. Met some cool folks, saw some familiar faces and hung out by the campfire.

Nice to have a " resident" reporter. May be you can put them to work and take your old tranny out to prep them for unfortunate times.

Good luck. May be see you next year.

I hope the DT466 does not require the un-obtainium spacer ring that the TE444 requires to hook it to a 643

Fortunately, no. The 643 bolts right on the the DT466...I actually have to remoced the spacer ring that is there for the AT545...
