DT466 rotary IP upgrade

A question for the diesel savoy among us. I've got a '82 dt466 with the rotary injector pump on it. It runs fine for now, but I also have a '93 inline spare pump and I'd like to know if the rotary IP can be replaced by the newer inline IP w/o too much trouble?

I've heard that the power can be turned up on the inline IP much higher than the rotary IP. Currently both pumps are rated at 210hp. How much horsepower can I expect to gain with each pump.

One more question about the dt466 engine, Is the '82 engine a indirect injection (chambered) engine, and if so, what year did International go to direct injection design?

Thanks in advance.

Re: DT466 rotary IP upgrade

The 466 is direct injection. The pump can swap over, if it's the early 93 model. You'll need the pump, the adaptor to the timing case, gear, injectors & lines. You can crank it up to around 240hp with the freebie mods. Set the timing to around 19*.

Re: DT466 rotary IP upgrade

Thanks for the reply. It's great to know that the inline IP can work. I have the pump, gear and lines on the spare pump, just need to get the adapter plate. Do both engines use the same injectors? Or will I need to upgrade the injectors too when I install the newer IP?

Neither of my dt466 engines are after-cooled, do you think tuning them up to 240 hp will cause any problems as is or should I be planning to add an after-cooler with my other upgrades? My max yearly mileage will be less than 15k with a gross weight under 30k and that's only when towing my trailer and Jeep. But I do plan to travel thru a lot of the mountains states, maybe even up to Alaska at least once.

Re: DT466 rotary IP upgrade

You can use your old injectors, but you'll need to take em to a shop to have the pop pressure raised. The inline pumps run at a higher pressure, and actually burns a little cleaner. You could even have them find a little bigger tips for them, for an even bigger power jump . Having the intercooler is a great idea, but if you first do a few miles with it and note the EGT, you'll get a better idea. It's definately going to be borderline in the summer with the fuel turned up.

Re: DT466 rotary IP upgrade

Thank you Nevrenufhp, this is good information to have. Now I can start getting my parts together. Plus I can save big bucks bc I can do everything myself except rework the injectors. I'll let you know how it turns out upon completion.

Re: DT466 rotary IP upgrade

I would get consultation from a Diesel injector pump rebuilder or diesel performance shop.
