How much stuff to remove to replace my fan clutch?

Hi All,

It looks to me like I will have to remove all of the cooling goodies from the grill back on my 2006 FE300 to replace my free spinning fan clutch.

1) Are there any published step by step instructions on how to get access?

2) While I am in there are there other things i should replace (idler pullys etc) [114K miles]...

I am clearly living the down side of an FE...

I’d check each pulley for any wobble/play, cracks, mounting bolt torque, and replace the belt(s). Clean out the rad from leaves or crud, check the fan itself for lose parts or dings/bends, and change any hoses if they look cracked/frayed or feel spongy.

I had to change out a compressor on a 87 BBAA. Had it completely disassembled except for one 1/2" bolt in the front of the bracket that required pulling the whole front of the bus out including the radiator. About an hour of labor for 3 seconds to remove the bolt.

HUGE fan clutch in hand.

It looks like I am going to have to pull the front of the bus off to get the radiator and shroud out of the way.

Does any one have a picture of the removal of an IC flat nose radiator and CAC?

I am assuming I am unbolting supports and bumper from the frame rails and rolling it forward...

Pictures of the swap

Hi All,

Here are some pictures of the fan clutch swap.
As a note if you have a split cooler system (CAC on top, radiator on the bottom) you must set the thermostat all the way counter clockwise or the fan will not start until 210-220+.

I learned the hard way adjusting this after the radiator is installed is almost impossible to perform.

I think the cooler air through the Inter-cooler (CAC) keeps the clutch housing much cooler then a back to back setup and prevents a normal engagement of the fan with the factory setting.

With the setting at minimum it kicks in just below 210 and shuts off about 180-185.

Christopher has a method for adjusting them without pulling anything. He made a a video.
Love to see maintenance updates on buses! Cooling systems are no joke.
