Yes. You'd be fine towing that. Forum member YellowXJ tows a Cherokee across the usa with a short bus on a van chassis with a gas 350. Diesel bus with allison can tow that no problemo.

ECCB is absolutely correct about the engine being able to haul that load fine, but the transmission may be marginal for your purposes.

Well. let's do the math.

Specs on that vehicle state:
Curb weight 18,000–35,000 lb (8,164.7–15,875.7 kg) (GVWR)

Tow vehicle 4500 lbs

Allison 2500 trans is good for 33,000

Do you plan on adding any cabinets or water tanks or anything, or is it just an empty shell?

I guess we need more data about the bus. If we average the curb weights we get 25,000 + 4500 lbs = 30,000 lbs, which is under the max they recommend.

Tell us how heavy your bus is and what your build will have.

Love Land Crushers- found how capable they really are while doing volunteer work in Ecuador. You'd look at a mountain trail and think- "no way", but it'd crawl right- up.

I had a 1959 FJ40 That was heavily modified and a 1981 FJ40 bone stock w/ hardtop and ambulance doors. Best truck ever, except rust- and I've had all the jeeps.

GVWR of the bus is 23,000 pounds. Don't know the curb weight. Light, minimalist build out, no waste or fresh water tanks.

The math says it looks like a go!

That should put your mind at ease.

Nice toad ! Are you towing 4-down, or dolly...trailer?

J60 diesel? 12H-T?

I also thought that 2500 would work fine with a toad. What would be an adequate transmission in this case?

Thank you very much! This is all in the planning stage but would probably be 4 down. My plan is to go somewhere, stay for while and use the Cruiser. Home on wheels with vehicle. Then, on to another great location. Gasoline fueled. 12H-T? Cheers, Norm

12H-T is the diesel.

Have you towed that 4-down? Some vehicles are not fond. Manual hubs and you can probably get-by.

Last line, from Toyota
Edit- you have 1987...did not see.

Thanks, hadn't given that any thought. Years ago I pulled a Volkswagon bus behind a 1970 full sized bus with a Chevy 350 V8. LC has Warn, manually locking free wheeling hubs. I'm going to check into this on the Land Cruiser sites. By the way, I would love too find that bus which was last located in Sussex County NJ around 1991.

I'll post additional at a more suitable location on this website.

Absolutely post more pictures of the Brown Bomber.

Please take a minute and fill-in your profile so we all know what you are driving and it's specs. Location, too. It makes it easier for people to answer ?'s

My last 40 footer weighed 17.9k and that had a HEAVY engine and was built like a tank.
I'll bet without seats your bus weighs somewhere in the neighborhood of 15-18k.

Hey Rusty!
Just getting started on my own project and need to figure my transmission too. Seems like you've got a good way to do that.
I've got a '98 Thomas bluebird w/ International 3800 T444E
VIN: 1HVBBABP7VH499885

Any help here really goes a long way. I know nothing, and I want to learn.

best way is to get under the bus, rare to have any thing except allison transmisson, the Identification plate on the transmission should be on the left side.... or driver's side on a north american bus. the tag is rectangle about two inches by three inches. Bring a rag and flashlight with you

most common numbers you are likely to see are 545 or 643

1HVBBABP7VH499885 Was built with a spicer ES43-5A 5-Speed manual trans. Cast iron case and clutch housing. No idea if that’s what it still has in it.
