I had an E450 Thomas for a while. I took it to a local mechanic who used to be a fleet mechanic for an outfit that had a bunch of similar year E450 box trucks. He told me that for many repairs the lifted the body off of the frame to gain access to the engine.

It's doubtful that I would buy another. I am on the hunt for a nice "full size " shorty with a 12v 5.9 and MT-643 or (I wish) a 2000 series.

I've pulled a 7.3 from a E350, let me tell you that is a MASSIVE PAIN with the body on. You have to pull the water/oil cooler, oil pan, and flywheel to get the engine in and out, not to mention the rad and grill and all that fun stuff too. Then going back in you have to put the oil pan on with the engine hanging in the bay. Not sure which is worse pulling engines on motor homes or a E van, both are chores I hope to never do again.

I've never enjoyed working on vans, nor met anyone who does!
I always look for a 6 cyl if buying a van, that way I have a little more room to change belts and stuff.
Watching vids of spark plug changes on diesel and 6.8 ford vans makes me so glad I dont' own one.

I own a Evan but it's just got the ol 5.8L gasser in it, I wish it were the 7.3 PSD, but changing plugs last year wasn't really that bad through the dog house, easier than changing them on a ranger with the AC crap in the way I'll tell you what.
But I sure wouldn't want to do much work on it, only good thing is once the trans/slush box dies in it it will be easy to pull since all the bolts are super easy to get to from the doghouse. Trans in my van shudders all the time, but it's been doing that since I bought it 2 years ago so who knows, I had automatics unless it's an Allison.
What's funny is I towed a camper (28')for a man at the first of the year about 300 miles and it never shuddered once while under a load but as soon as the trailer was off it it went right back to it, no slipping at all either.
I'm not a auto trans man at all, I'm just waiting on it to crap out and i'll rebuild the trans.

Yeha no worries man. I got overheated trimming some hedges and had to lay down in the shade.
Was *only* 91 today and there was a nice gentle breeze. That's how it snuck up on me.
