International 9.0L Diesel

Anyone know anything about these motors? 9.0L sounds huge...do they make good power?

Thanks,
Ben

Re: International 9.0L Diesel

I've got a 345 gasser, but found a bus with the 9.0 that may be cheap enough to do an engine swap. I don't read here many good things about this engine, so I'm wondering if it's worth the effort and cost.

Any feedback would be much appreciated.

Re: International 9.0L Diesel

I drove them for years. We never had an issue with them. They were tough engines. Way better than the 7.3. We werent easy on them either, we drove them hard. If I wanted an NA engine, I would not hesitate. I would take it over a 3208 anytime.

Re: International 9.0L Diesel

Old post but I just drove my 9.0 400 miles (150 miles of freeway) and got around 10mpg. It is governed at 2900-3100 rpm (about 62mph except downhill). From the research I have done, the later models of the 9.0l did not have the head gasket problems of the earlier models, so I would look at the later ones for a swap. They are also very heavy engines compared to the 444 (7.3L) They were discontinued due to emmissions after the 1987 model year.

Re: International 9.0L Diesel

Also, from other forrums, I have read that Mexicans are buying them up like crazy and taking them back down south... interesting. Probalby because they are naturally aspirated that makes them more desirable in remote areas ??? I really like the way mine roars when you step on the pedal, I just wish the transmission (AT545) had a lock up converter.

Re: International 9.0L Diesel

A DT-466 would be more preferable and perform better than a 9.0L, but the 9.0's are old workhorses and are very mechanically simple. Just my $.02. The have a very nice exhaust tone as well.
