Is this a J1708 diagnostic port?

Saw mention of this in another thread, but I didn't want to derail it. Our engine is a mechanical DT466, so I didn't think there was any sort of OBD system. There's a gray 6-pin port under the steering wheel to the left.

There's a 6-pin to OBD2 cable on Amazon that purports to read info from 6-pin to an OBD2 scanner. Is there anything useful that I could learn from this, or am I barking up the wrong tree?

That looks like a J1708 port to me. I wouldn't expect one on a mechanical DT.

You cannot "talk to " an J1708 equipped vehicle with an OBDII scanner. You may be able to find adapters that allow you to plug into the J1708 with the ODBII scanner they will not talk to each other.

Take a look at:

Scanguage J1708

I wouldn't expect one either, but a buddy of mine has the sister bus (same district, same auction) and he tipped me off to this. He was supposed to have had the International dealer scan it when they rebuilt his engine, but I haven't heard back from him about if they were able to and what they found. It seems like 3 pins are empty and 3 are wired (power/data/ground)? I'm just curious if I should bother getting a scanner or if it would reveal anything useful. I know very little about this kind of thing, but being able to read important engine data would be kinda nice.

steve thats a 9 pin.

o nthe 6 pin 4 out of the 6 pins are normally used.. in 96 the chassis was available with electronic engines.. 3 box engines which look nearly like a mechanical version except they dont have the P-pump on the side of course... but theres no computer hanging off the side..

also if there was an electronic trans or an ABS module the port would exist for diagnosing those.

So, there is ABS on this bus. It's got a mt643 trans though. Christopher, are you saying that i might have a 3 box engine and this port may be useful or nah?

It’s easy to tell if you have a 3 box engine. Pop the hood and look for a pump with hard metal lines going to the top of the engine. If you have that then the engine is purely mechanical and the port is for diagnosing your ABS, if you don’t have the hard lines then the engine is an early 466E with the 3 box controls. Both engines were sold side by side through the 96 year. In 97 the usual side hanging computer was put in.. and the mechanical 466 was done after 97.

Awesome, thanks for that. I'll pop the hood later and take a look. AFAIK it's not a 466E as it's badged on the hood DT466.
I did find this Navistar Servicemaxx software that mentions 1994-97 being 3 box engines.

Navistar built both 3 box '466E' and mechanical "NGD" 466s. from 94-97.. im not sure of the specifics of sale pricing and what not on why build both.. my guess is there were many who bought volumes of engines who wanted mechanical injection as electronic diesels in general back then were a new idea...

Yup. Mechanical NGD engine here, so the port must just be for ABS....so no fancy schmancy tablet-based gauges in my future LOL

I'm too leery of tweaking anything for fear of screwing something up! I'd love a trans temp gauge though and an oil temp gauge would probably be a good idear too.
