Is this normal...?

I bought a bus this past weekend and I have a question regarding vibration. The bus has a DT466 and 643 tranny. Starts well and seems to run great. When the bus is idling in neutral or drive it vibrates or rattles rather loudly. Once I start moving the bus smooths out and there is no vibration or anything that seems out of the ordinary.

The idle rpm is about 650 which I think is where it should be.

Is it normal to have a significant vibration which disappears as soon as you start moving.

Clearly I’m new to diesels.

Ok, I’ll move on to the next task, seat removal. Just take them to the dump or is there a use for bus seats.

Metal salvage yard will buy them. About $5-$6/ 100lbs.

You may not need the seat covers and cushions, but many of us have used the metal for various projects including roof hatch delete and skinning over where windows were removed, as well as rust hole repair (many seats have sheet metal bottoms or backs).

Sounds normal to me. The three things I like most about my little diesel are: That sweet exhaust smell, The rattle of the pistons and the fact that if I need to mix a gallon of paint all I have to do is set it on the floor and let the engine idle. They don't call 'em paint shakers for nothing!

It's $3 per 100lb here.... 3 weeks ago it was $4 per 100....

I just scrapped out 2 class A RVs and found out how metal isn't worth picking up and loading much less anything else.

My bus site got robbed and they took all my seats, ceiling panels and heaters from the trash pile in back of it. They basically hauled 3/4 of my trash off for me which was very nice of them, but it must have been barely worth their while to do it.

I'm still annoyed with you guys who actually get $ for your old seats. The last two buses I have pulled seats out of I have had a hard time finding some place to take them without charging me $.

That sucks about the situation though.... But yeah it wouldn't be worth that much. 5 years ago I'd goto peoples places and get scrap if they were offering it for the taking (not stealing, but it was easy to get on CL) now I don't bother with it unless they were willing to pay for the labor because the metal won't cover it... Copper and alumn are low too, I've got piles of that waiting till price goes up some before I take that stuff.

Have someone turn the idle screw up to 700-750 RPM and it'll smooth out a good bit. Did that to mine. A 6cyl will shake a bit at low idle.
It won't hurt the transmission.
