performance chip for 95 International?

so we got this 95 International. Came with 50,000 miles on it. Gutted it out, built 3 bunks, a little sink area, 2 bench's, and a table. Took it to go on tour with our band. Now has about 57,000. held up wonderfully on that trip. we were averaging about 12 mpg. not horrible but, there are gonna be A LOT more miles put on this bus and it'd be nice to not spend as much. So I started looking at performance chips and air intake systems. They all vary in how efficient they are but they say they increase torque, mpg. They don't make them specifically for International/ Navistar vehicles but it's the same as the 7.3 ford powerstroke. has anyone else used one? advise on something that will help raise our mpg?

Re: performance chip for 95 International?

Well no....... But on 2 of my previous motorhomes I installed the black 4 inch plastic drain hoses in the front, used one of the flange pieces, screwed it in place to the back of the grill. Ran one hose to the air intake kinda homemade ram air system. LOL and the second piece just to top of the engine compartment to run cooler air over the top of the engine. Be sure if you do this to put some holes for the water to drain out . I put small holes in the hose just as it turned upward from the grill. Never a problem with either. It helped keep it somewhat cooler inside the vehicle. As for as increased mpg or hp I will never know as I could not tell a difference in either one..... but I did it again to the second motorhome just because I had the parts on hand.......

My .02, leave it stock. Want better mileage, drive slower on the open road. Better air intake and exhaust, go for it. A chip.....naw, dont think thats a beneficial route.

The electronic 466(E) started in later 95, and was full production in 96. You could actually still get a mechanical 466 in 96 & 97 everywhere but CA.
If it's mechanical, gaining power and mpg can be easily done. If it's electronic, it wont get much better.

I think it's a 7.3.

There are performance modules for the T444E available.

I don't own a bus yet so I am expert however in reading on some diesel forums I found this chip (programmer) recommended several times.

That's not for a 7.3.

Re: performance chip for 95 International?

you are complaining about 12 miles per gallon? That is 50% better fuel economy than many skoolies get.

I would be extremely happy on any of my cross country skoolie trips if i had gotten 10 mpg!

12 is pretty awesome, nearly unobtainable in a full size bus.

The best way to improve mileage of any vehicle is to adjust the nut behind the wheel!

I agree with the previous poster, want to get metter mileage? drive slower! also, reduce your unnessary idle time, and make sure your tires are properly inflated, especially your steer tires. (slightly underinflated rear tires probably have little effect on mpg in a skoolie.) Drafting behind big trucks at a safe distance can also increase mpg.

If not already using it, synthetic motor oil may make a small difference.

Intake and exhaust mod's will likely make zero difference in MPG.

slightly off topic, but on modern fuel injected gasoline automobiles, tests have shown that the best mpg is achieved using a very dirty stock air filter. Less air = less fuel. While the fuel/air ratio does not apply to a diesel, having the engien breath more air will likely not help with MPG.
