Smoking dt466

I think I already know whats going on but I just wanted to put it out there to see if anyone else has the same issue.

1990 dt466, mechacal engine, did an inframe less than 500 miles ago. Almost no blowby at the draft tube, turbo rebuilt, starts at first crank and runs very nice.
The issue is grayish smoke , goes away a little after warming for 1/2 hr.
Romp on it and I get a huge cloud. The last time I drove it was a year ago tho I start and hi idle every few weeks. When I drove it last, took it for a long drive and still had some smoke. The oil that was in the exhaust has been burned out already.
I have thought of injectors or pump already, somewhat ruled them out.

Some posts I read have said that these thing do smoke a bit. Maybe the oil ring haven't seated? This thing smokes so bad at times I'm afraid to drive it.
I will be installing a stack in the back just so it clears other drivers.
Any other dt466 owners with the same problem?

BTW lets assume I did the inframe correctly.

Is it using engine oil or is the smoke made of diesel?

that happens when you start it and idle or dont drive it. the smoke will probably quit after you get it up to temp driving for several miles.

Mine sat for 3-6 months and didn't let out more than a tiny puff of smoke from starting up. 10* in KY started first try with very little smoke... which went away pretty much immediately.
238k miles fwiw.

Not using oil so far, looks and smells like part burned diesel.
Yesterday I ran it at a hi idle for an hour. barely got warm, radiator hoses stayed cold. How long should these things take to get to temp?

You need to work the engine to get it up to temp. If its gray its likely not diesel.
If it was some black when you give it throttle I'd think it was fuel.

what was the reason for the in frame rebuild? do a coolant pressure test to see if any O-rings are leaking, also injectors will give a greyish smoke color.

The reason for the inframe was the #2 cylinder was pumping oil, ended up being a broken valve guide that damaged the first land of the piston.

If it's not using oil, than it's fuel.

That rules out a oil ring on the piston.

Now you just need to figure out why it's not burning the fuel.
