T444E random gauge sweeps

On a trip I took this past week in my bus, a 1995 Thomas vista shorty with a t444e/545, the gauge cluster would go through its sweep that it does before starting, except it would happen driving down the highway. There was no change in how it drove, and the gauges would come back and read correctly as soon as they finished the sweep. It started about 2 hours into the trip and then would happen sporadically, a total of around 15 times in the following 2 hours. Anyone know why this happens?

I would be concerned that your ECU is browning out and rebooting itself and that is why you are seeing the gauge sweeps. But you said you have the T444e, which I assume is the electronic fuel injection, I assume it would be very noticeable if the electronic fuel injection browned out even for a part of a second.

I had a classic car with a wonky regulator that would lightly charge with the lights off, with the lights on, it would randomly brown out the pertronix aftermarket electronic ignition module, and the engine would cut out for maybe half a second before the module recovered and started working again. That was very noticeable, and I assume it would behave similar for your bus.

It's a shot in the dark but I would take a look at the ground connection for the gauge cluster.

what PNW said... the gauge sweep is not triggered by the ECU, it is triggered by the gauge cluster losing power and powering back up... if the gsauge cluster loses communicartion due to a brown out of the ECU, the gauges will just freeze in place, they wont re-sweep when comms is restored.. id be suspect of power or ground to the cluster..

I also suspect a power loss or connection to the cluster. Also keep in mind that the cluster in these older International models are known to fail.

My 1996 International 3600 had the whole cluster freeze up while driving today. It was doing the random sweeps then froze.
Am i hearing correctly that it is most likely a bad ground?

Anytime every thing stops working, even momentarily, it's time to start checking grounds.

Thanks. I will start looking into the dash. Does anyone have a wiring diagram for a 96 3600 vista?
