Tach not working

What drives the tachometer on a 1981 S1853 International 9.0L?

You have a few options. Most likely it is electronic so there is a sending unit mounted on the side of the flywheel housing that reads the flywheel teeth. If it's mechanical tach, I think It had a cable that ran to a spot on the injection pump(never seen it but it was optional). Let me know what you got and I'll help you troubleshoot it.
