Tranny Options/Swap

My wife and I are planning on buying a bus next spring. Looking for a DT466 and air brakes. Most that I see advertised are auto's. I have seen a few with 5 speeds but never a 6 or 7. I'm sure if we got a 5 speed unit swapping in a 6 or 7 wouldn't be that much of a hassle. Has anyone swapped out a 5 to a 7 or an auto to a manual? I do have a Fuller-Eaton remanned RT-6613 behind a 3208 in my old Bruin(that I might part out, less than 10,000 miles on the tranny) anyone seen a 13 speed Schoolie? I don't think the Road Ranger is an overdrive tranny but I think the 7 speed is OD.
We have a '92 F600 chip truck with a 6.6 and an Allison and neither of us are impressed with the Allison on the mountians here in Vermont. I have driven several IH trucks with the DT466 and have always been happy with them. Our plan with the schoolie is to travel the country towing a trailer hauling either one or maybe even both our Jeeps. Any input or thoughts are appreciated.

DT's are great, but they dont get the best economy. That tranny is not an OD. Lots of options though!

I've read this link over a couple times, alot of good information if you take the time to read through it.

To me it sounds like the Roadranger RTO6610 would make a really nice swap. If you really like shifting gears . I have the DT466 with the spicer 7spd. I have alot of the same plans as you. But I really haven't driven it enough yet ,to decide on how well the tranny will work for me. Pretty sure better than any of the autos though.

Re: Tranny Options/Swap

Was the Allison in the chip truck a 545 or did it have lockup capability. I have the MT643 and like it, just need taller gears to not have to run it on the governor. Don't think I've driven anything with a 545 or similar, but they don't get rave reviews. Options could be to find a later International with a 3060. I've driven some behind the electronic ones, a 4700, and they're very nice. (4700, the Allison, not the International. It was in a Freightliner)
