Hub piloted wheels will have single lug nuts with a built in washer. The wheels will have a flat face against which the washer will seat.
Stud piloted wheels will have single lug nuts up front and a thimble and nut on the rear axle. The thimble is used to secure the inside dual and the nut will secure the outside dual. Each lug hole will have a chamfer that will match the chamfer on the lug nuts and thimbles. The chamfer allows the lug nuts to seat tightly against the wheel.
You can NOT interchange the lug nuts as using the wrong lug nuts will not allow you to get the lug nuts torqued to the right amount.
Also, most stud piloted lugs will have left threads on the left side of the bus. Each left thread stud will have a 'L' stamped in the end of the lug bolt.

Odd that most of the trucks I've driven in the last few years have had all right-handed threads on the studs. But it's true there are left handed studs, marked as you have described. I've just not found them to be as common as all that.

Jesus Christ that green bus is beautiful. My 3800 w/ Dayton style hubs has chrome lug nuts. The name escapes me but they are off the “closed on one end but open on the other” variety. Looks like a bell sort of.

I just did wheel sims on mine instead of go with Alcoa's.. I drive in the winter and aluminum wheels dont look good real long ... wheel sims are a couple hundred bucks a set so if I curb one, break one, etc.. i just get a new one...

My wheel covers have the same number of hand holes as my wheels. I suppose if my wheels are a heat sink it could possibly slow it a little ? Interesting thought .. I have disc brakes on that bus, wonder if it’s different for drums..

Do you have a part number or place to get new studs? I’ve got the stud centric wheels currently but I have a set of polished 24.5” Directional Freightliners I want to run. I can do the work I just need the studs and new nuts.
