There seems to be quite a bit of difference between the early and later C7. In addition to bidding farewell to the HEUI injection system in favor of a common rail system, variable nozzle turbos, cracked powdered metal rods, and deep skirt aluminum pistons were also among the changes, I believe the muffler also contains a catalytic converter. It seems like a plus that they replaced the HEUI injection, and I certainly do like the engine brake feature (high horsepower models only) that comes along with the variable nozzle turbo, but it has me wondering what the effect of all this technology is on the long-term cost of ownership.
As far as the EPA cracking down on shops that defeat the emission systems or delete them, it seems like a waste of time and money to concern themselves with what a tiny handful of enthusiasts might be doing, as long as fleet and other commercial users are playing by the rules.
My next step is to get my bus down to a dealer who can do a warranty download from the ECM so that I can find out exactly what my engine and transmission are currently rated for,, If the engine is at 300 hp, as I suspect, to see if they can turn it up to the maximum rating, which I believe is 360 hp
