5.9 Cummins thermostat replace

sitting outside the auto parts place with a thermostat in my hand, waiting for the thing to cool off (will prolly overnight here), and just wanted some hand-holding before I effed something up.

Is this the correct manifold? Top right - 3 bolts?

Yes, that is the right spot. Right beneath the upper radiator hose. Make sure that you get the right thermostat for it. We ran into overheating issues when we used the wrong one. The correct one is more of a high flowing thermostat. Here is a pic

The one we had problems with looked like this.

As you can see, the first one has a larger area for the coolant to flow when opened. Sadly, most parts stores only carry the second.

exactly the response I was looking for. Is that the part number on the side of the correct one?

Which parts house did you find yours at?

thanks booyah, good info to know. turns out the device was MUCH bigger than the one I replaced, even tho it did not look exactly like yours.

Bottom line - problem solved, running much cooler now than before I hit the Rockies - now back to having fun

saved myself $300, as that was what was quoted by a diesel shop (2+ hours) it took me all of 15 minutes to pull and replace

5015708ac is the mopar #, Cummins # is 3946849. I usually go with the mopar piece because the dodge dealer is closer, and we get a better break on parts from them then through cummins. Not sure which one would be closest to you. So dred, where the hell are you?

The one on the right in your pictures will work. I think that's the newest revision from cummins. As you can see, the one on the left has a wayyyyyy smaller hole then the one on the right. That little one might be a good substitute for a pickup, but in the busses they overheated. Glad to hear you fixed your problem.
