Changed all fuel lines, can't get prime to lift pump.

96 bluebird Tc2000 5.9 Cummins 12 Valve

Hey guys, I replaced all of my fuel hoses. With the banjos disconnected from the filter I pushed the primer bulb less than 50 times and got some fuel.

Decided to call it a night, hooked up the filter and started trying to prime the system this morning. I can't get any fuel to flow now. I can hear liquid moving around up near the filter but nothing comes out of the banjo. The bulb does get harder to press.

Do I need to replace the lift pump?

You did fill the fuel filter with clean fuel when you changed it out?

I only filled the fuel water separator, not the secondary fuel filter. I even turned the key to see if the engine would pump fuel to it and not a drip.

It sounds as if you have sucked air.

Now you are going to have to prime the system.

It isn't going to be easy and don't crank the engine to do it.

The best and easiest solution is to plumb in an electric fuel pump that will push fuel from the tank to the filters.

You can either power the pump with a momentary switch on the dash or power it up with power from the key switch.

There are other ways of priming the system but it can get messy and take a lot of time.

Are you suggesting that it's OK to wire up this "additional lift pump" in a bus-on-pump-on mode, as in all the time? I hadn't heard that, except in cases where it's like 25 ft+ of fuel line between tank and motor. TIA

Remove and fill, and install all fuel filters. Crack injector line at #6 injector. Pump the primer until fuel starts flowing from line. Tighten line and crack #5 line loose. Repeat on all 6 cylinders and then close all lines. Pump the primer until it's too hard to push. Crank engine. Good luck!
