...or...go with a single high output. You can get alts up to about 300+ amps. Mine is 250. Most are built for EMS and other service type vehicles. Might even be cheaper since they usually use the original mount/bracket.

Hey NguyenBus,

Did you ever find an answer to this?

I would like to add a 2nd alternator to my Bluebird with an 8.3. I will be running a 24v house battery bank and want an alternator dedicated to charging the house battery bank.

Thanks.

S.

Nah. I put a 260 amp alternator in my carpenter 5.9 cummins. I can charge my huge solar bank rolling and run my air conditioner at idle.

24v

Military runs 24V alternators on the cummins 8.3 for the M939 series 5-tons. Very mechanical everything, 1991.

Might be worth a look?

Dead Pirate --- does your 260 have an external rectifier? And how do you have it wired into your system?

I am still on the hunt for a dual alternator setup for my 8.3.

Anyone had any success finding a solution?

The information I keep finding is on Dodge Cummins Diesel Forum

cumminsforum.com

thedieselstop.com

Dual Alternator Kits - National Alternators

https://www.nationsstarteralternator...Kits-s/209.htm

You've probably seen these because they're so easy to find.

I'd start with making a custom bracket and setting up a belt, but I have no idea about the wiring.

Is this a safer method than trying to use the single alternator to charge house batteries?

Ok, I'll bite again/still. Why are you not fabbing a bracket made out of two store bought mounts welded together. That's assuming you don't go 100% from scratch and homemade.

Gives you some redundancy at the very least. Less load per alt maybe?

Thank you for the suggestions.

I did find those and if I wanted a dual alternator on my 5.9 I would be in good shape. Unfortunately I need it for my 8.3 and these folks don't appear to offer kits for the 8.3.

The single alternator will not charge the house batteries because the single alternator is a 12 Volt alternator and the house batteries are 24 Volt. I need a 24 Volt alternator for the house batteries.

Unfortunately I lack the design & fabrication skills to build my own.

Has anyone actually found a dual alternator setup for the 8.3?

Bah humbug!! You need a jigsaw (or cutting wheel, etc.), some 3/8ths inch plate, a sharpie, and a drill. Maybe a big piece of 3/8ths plate so you can do it over when you screw up the measurements/alignment the first 3 times.

You can use bolt holes that are already on the engine and just get longer bolts. Make a plate for the front and rear side of the alternator so the mounting points of the alt itself is sammiched in there.

Bonus points if you go out and buy a plasma cutter. Ever use one? I've used a friend's. I absolutely LOVE that thing. $1500 tho but oneday someday.

Nah.... I am much more of a splinter picker than a metal manipulator.

Seriously, this is a piece of the conversion that I would be better off buying an off the shelf solution than trying to build it myself.
