No worth the trouble if you don't get an overdrive.

Sorry Cal, what does that really mean? I'm not a mechanic.

This will be something I head north a few hours for some camping and Riding with friends and or family maybe ten times a year. Some big hills but no mountains.

Both autos that are in most buses( AT545 and MT643) have a final gear of 1 to 1. Engine turns 2000 rpms, drive shaft turns 2000(lets leave the non-lockup converter out of this discussion). When you have overdrive like a MD3060, fifth gear is .75 to 1. All things being equal, your engine with turn 25% less to turn the drive shaft the same 2000 rpms. What does this mean in the real world? If you were going 55 at 2000 rpm, in overdrive, you would be turning 1500 rpm. Less fuel, less noise, etc.

that transmission also has a 7.52 ratio first gear, so you could change the rear end ratio to something in the 3.5 area and get low RPM's on the highway

Hey Cal.
Do you know of a 5 speed with over drive that will work with the remote shifter on my rear engine Gillig?
I have 5.29 rears so over drive would be nice. And my throw out bearing needs replacing so now is the time.
Thanks.

You could go with the Allison MD3060R which would give you
two overdrive gears .75 and .65 plus a retarder. In sixth gear
you would be turning 1500-1600 RPM at 60 MPH just like some
of the later stick and staples motor homes. Also no worries
about linkage matching. Only requires wiring and mounts with
drive shaft mods.

Yes but most school bus applications only come with one overdrive. I guess a couple of members have managed to get their 3060 programed by Allison for 6th gear.

Sorry, I am not that familiar with manual model numbers. I had picked up one RTO910 and a few RT610 transmissions. They were 10 speeds and had the remote shift set up. The 610s were all purchased and sent to Nicaragua. I still have the RTO910 but it is big and has overdrive. It has a SAE #1 housing. I got them from a school district. They all came from Crowns and Gilligs.

I also have a couple of 5 speeds that are for military 5 ton trucks. They are guberment rebuild in the shipping drums but are not set up for the remote shift. They have a .78 to 1 fifth gear. I was thinking about using one of them for my beautiful Texas bus but bought a MT647 from another member in Las Vegas.

If you talk real nice to me I might be persuaded to sell one of them.

Thanks Cal, I pretty much new this wasn't a smart bus and fuel mileage was going to suck, and the noise...well it's a 40 foot rattle can. I'll turn the stereo up a little yell at the passengers and split the fuel bill with buddies/brother that I ride with. I was more concerned with failure 'cause it was a piece of $#!t and would eventually leave me stranded.
