Is a Cummins filter a Cummins filter?

I have a 2002 Freightliner/Thomas with a Cummins 5.9 engine.

Can I just trot down to the auto parts store and ask for a 2002 Cummins oil filter? (as in "Dodge"?)

And is there a brand I want or a brand I don't want?

Thanks, folks!

No, I believe the threads for the filter are different IIRC. Dodge is smaller and uses like an inch diameter thread while your commercial cummins will use larger 1 and 1/8" threads.

Get a good filter. Wix, Baldwin, Hastings, etc.

I avoid Fram because of their issues a few years ago.

Booyah - I would greatly appreciate that! Thanks!

I don't have the engine number handy, and I'm doubting the VIN would help... but it's a 5.9 Cummins in a 2002 Freightliner drivetrain/Thomas body bus (mfg 11/01, I believe).

The top of the canister looks like this one:

You took a picture of the fuel filter cap. Is that what you want?

The oil filter numbers for baldwin filters are
Dodge trucks - BT7349
Medium duty - B7177

The oil filter will be forward and below the turbo on the passenger side of the bus.

Duh.

I was tired when I asked the original question.

I am interested in the fuel filter.

The oil filter (at least on my engine) is a spin-on type and I was able to pull the number off ths side of the filter.

The fuel filter is a cartridge type and I'm not sure if a 2002 Freightliner Bus Cummins 5.9 fuel filter is the same as every other 2002 Cummins 5.9 filter.

Apologies for making extra work for you all -

Fuel filters are the same between the pickup and a bus.

Baldwin # PF7977

Would that PF7977 be the same filter for a 2001 24 Valve Cummins 5.9? Baldwin’s filter finder is showing me a spin on type as the match for my bus, but my engine compartment looks just like the OP’s.

Disclaimer: this will be my first DIY filter change.

Don't forget fleetguard. It is official OEM filtration for Cummins.

Fuel filter or oil filter?

The pf7977 is a fuel filter, and it goes in the housing that's pictured a few posts above. The oil filter is a cartridge type and is down and forward of the turbo.

The bus will have a fuel filter and a water separator towards the back. Maybe that's the cartridge filter you're looking at?
