Isc 8.3 vs dt466e

Hello,

Im am still in search of a bus. While i would prefer a mechanical fuel injection I'm mostly finding newer electric engines. Any opinions on isc 8.3 vs dt466e for power, reliability, longevity? I have read that the pre 2003 isc had the CAPS fuel injection prior to common rail and that they had issues. Dt466e ran a HEUI but havn't read anything bad about them. Any other pros or cons to these engines?

Thanks

Ted

Great question.

Both engines have very good reputations. I look forward to hearing from the DT contingent.

alot depends on what bus body style you want.. the 8.3 is most common in a rear engine.. the 466E seems to show up most in front engine busses, though it exists in rear engine as well..

The only 8.3 I have seen are in RE. I was set on getting a conventional but after some research i might be leaning toward a RE.

Bluebird did equip All American FE's with the 8.3.

Not sure I would want to turn wrenches on one though.... I like the access that an RE provides.

When I started looking for a bus I really only wanted something with a DT466 in it. It's just a great engine. Very smooth running, pretty good fuel efficiency, easy to work on. For me, the biggest benefit is how long it has been made. Parts are literally everywhere for it. The only downfall to the 466E is how expensive new fuel injectors can cost for the HEUI system.

The HPOP could be expensive to replace as well. I should look up pricing on 466 fuel system parts vs isc 8.3 as well as the pricing of in frame kits.

I almost won a BBAA FE with a mechanical 8.3 in it.

The only configuration I haven't seen and would buy in a heartbeat would be a SHORTY with 8.3!

There could be some out there, but I've not seen one.
Maybe someone should get a nice older bus and swap those in!

Hey CB,

If you happen to see a DT466 or 8.3 equipped shorty with a manual transmission, please tell at me.

I want one for a daily driver.

I'd have to find TWO, as I'd be first to snatch one up!

im not sure id want an 8.3 as a daily.. the ones ive been on seem, to have slow spool-up times.. would suck jumping out in shopping-center traffic.. the DT-466 comes up quickly and bright.. perfect for traffic..

If it were just a bit quicker than my 40 footer I would be okay with that. DT466 works too.

We were talking about 8.3 or DT466 shorties.

Not a problem anyway. I am not inclined to spend $3+ on a cup of coffee when I brew better coffee at home.

Seriously, I don't think that there is a wrong choice if you are picking between the DT and the 8.3.

I think that it is more of a personal preference. Ford vs Chevy kind of thing.

That would be a fun combo to drive. I've seen a manual shorty with a dt 360. A dt466 might be squeezed in with a little work.
