Oil Pressure?

I've noticed that my oil pressure drops down to about 25-30 psi while in gear at idle at a stop light. Was just wondering what the average oil pressure is for most 5.9s during an instance like this?

Sounds healthy to me. But I have an International. Yours is running higher than mine. I'm at about 20 at idle, 50 at full steam. I think as long as you're over ten or fifteen minimum, you're fine.

Is that pressure measured by an electrical OEM gauge or by a mechanical aftermarket gauge?

OEM gauges are notorious about reading inaccurately, particularly the electrical ones.

You need to use them as a guide to give you a baseline as to what is normal for your particular vehicle. As long as it stays within the same range all the time you know you are good to go.

To determine what your real pressure is you need to have a mechancial gauge mounted close to the engine. The longer the run is from the engine to the gauge the more inaccurate the reading will be.

We have one rear engine bus that has a mechanical gauge on the dashboard. It always reads 5 psi at idle and 15-20 psi while underway. The real pressure is closer to 15 psi at idle and 45-50 psi while underway. As long as it stays within that range and the low oil buzzer/light doesn't go off we are golden.

Sounds great guys....thanks. I was going off of the oem gauge on the dash. I'll definitely plan on putting a mechanical gauge on the engine for more accurate measurement. I'm pretty new Diesel engines, so I was just a bit concerned that possibly they might require more psi than gas engines. At below 30 psi on the oem gauge, it falls into the yellow zone.
