Starter problem

Actually from what I've seen the gears should mesh close to 80% or you get shearing of the teeth. I have seen this a lot on GM type starters. On our type starters it usually means bad bushings, wrong flywheel or wrong bendix. Either way the flywheel should be checked or this might happen again.

i assumed there was a core charge, but there wasnt. after lugging the starter back to napa, i asked them to dispose of it.


when i changed the transmission this summer, i did notice that the corner of the flywheel is worn down from the starter. thru the hole of the starter, there was quite a bit of damage where i had repeatedly tried to start the bus without enough bite between the gears.

i considered flipping the flywheel over, but the gear ring is offset, and reversed would be even further away from the starter.

if i wear through another starter, the flywheel may have to be replaced. But for now, she starts like a charm.

When I drove mine 500 miles home I didn't turn it off until I was 50 miles away. I had zero idea of how the thing worked, or didn't work, and I didn't want to risk it not starting again. I didn't open any doors or hatches, or luggage bays until I got it home, just in case they wouldn't close

That's actually making a pretty good mental image. I wish I could have been a fly on the proverbial metal ceiling of the bus during that trip.

We've all been there at one time or another, but maybe not quite to that degree.
