Top RPM for a cummings 5.9 24 valve engine

I just bought my first bus 31 passenger, 1999 Bluebird flat nose. I what should my top highway rpm be. While driving it home 2100 rpm was all it did. I read a little about limiters etc. Can the rpm's be higher than that for highway speeds? The speedo said 52 mph but I think that may be off. I was going down the interstate and I think if I was going 52 mph a lot more people would've been passing me.

A 24 valve Cummins 5.9 can see 3400 rpm. Can't say I would keep it that high, but it can do it.

i called Cummins today about the speed issue. They said it probably has a " Max speed setting" in the ECM. You have to take the bus to a Cummins dealership to have them go into the "features and perimeters" of the ECM and increase the maximum speed which in turn will let the rpm's increase with the speed. they said it would cost between $170.00 and $345.00 depending if they have to erase any password locks that may be on the ECM.

The 24 valve is electronic, not a 6BT.

It could spin to 3200-3400 as it sits, but you sure wouldnt want to hold it up there for too long. Fuel economy drastically drops, and so does the engine's over all life. My advice: re-gear the rear end, or get an overdrive trans.
