Valve job question

Exhaust side valve 1st. Cylinder.
After loosening the retaining screw i had a difficult time turning the adjusting screw. I turned quite a bit until it loosened up but couldnt set a gap. It looks like it is turned out too far.
I turned it over for a minute or two getting diesel to the injectors. It really sounded nice. But i didn't start it.
I didn't see much travel in the valve. If i start it and that cylinder doesn't exhaust what could happen ?

So it's a bent push rod. Anyone know a good mechanic in chillicothe ohio? Or even a decent tow?

I can't believe all the bad luck im having with this thing. I got the rod straight and it works now, but It doesn't sound right.

The problem, and I am far from a mechanic, is something caused the bent rod. Timing? Wear? Need to figure that out before you do anything else. If you can limp it to a mechanic, that would be a good start.

Timing is in the fuel system on diesels. But valves are actuated by the cam. So fuel timing causing detonation? I am really sketchy on diesel engines. If the lifter isn't perfectly straight your probably not seating the valve all the way. If it isn't already damaged, running it is going to cause the valve seat to wear. If it wears too much, it could be the difference between a new push rod or a valve job, or even new heads.
The valve lash could have been out of spec to cause a bent push rod.

You can check the rest of the valves for lash. I don't know if you can change 1 push rod. The lifter should be checked too.

That's a good point. You have to bar the motor over to tdc to check lash and adjust.
You would have to Google it, but you can adjust 3 cylinders at a time.
Your harmonic balancer may have tdc marked on it.
