is it possible to tell the transmission model from the VIN# of a vehicle, or do you have to get that from the manufacturer?

Not from the VIN number itself. Usually you can get year, make, model, engine size, country of origin and factory.

With our bus I was able to have the local International dealer/repair shop print out the complete build sheet. This listed the tranny as well as all the equipment/options it came with.

l've been having trouble getting a valid email address from Oshkosh Truck co, the maker of the bus - Thomas is the body man.

A dealer can use the VIN to get other info, but the VIN itself does not have the info you wanted.

A lot of times there is a data plate inside the bus that has the original engine and transmission serial numbers stamped on it.

Other then that, I've found only a dealer can reverse search a vin and come up with a build sheet.
