What do I need to know about a cummins 292 before I buy?

I have zilch for diesel engine experience. I did rebuild a mopar 360 but those are pretty basic. Is this a good engine or should I stay away from it?

What should I be on the look out for when I go to inspect the bus? Its a 1991 bus, with 250k kms.

There are a bunch of "292" engines, both gas & diesel. What make do you have?

Hmmm, interesting. The only Cummins I know of that go by "292" are the ISLe290-30 & ISLe-40. Both new generation electronic motors with quite a bit of HP. Can't recall ever seeing one in a skoolie before but I could be way off base. While I am not personally a fan of any engine with an "e" attached, those are considered to be outstanding motors.

If you have the VIN, you might try plugging it in here to see what THEY think is under the hood: Gates VIN Decoder

They said mine had a cummins, and it's a cat. But everything else was correct. Kinda cool!

1991 is probably a 5.9. What type of bus is it, school bus?
