Then I cooked a can of lima beans... Yeah I know, yuk lima beans... But, I didn't want to cook something and screw it up that I liked...

Oh yeah, here's the bonus, I made a can food handle...

Re: Hobo Stove with a bonus...

Well, it cooked the lima beans just fine but they were gross...

Let's see if this little thing can fry up an egg...

Yep, and it was really good...

I've got a project involving beer cans coming up that should be pretty cool...

Re: Hobo Stove with a bonus...

OK, messed around with it a little more tonight... Made one out of soda cans because they are a little wider than the keystone cans... Worked a bit better...

Made notches both top and bottom on the inner liner... Also cut flappy things to make it stay together while I assembled...

Also crimped the bottom instead of the top, just figured it would seal better if the top was overlapping on the outside...

Then fried another egg and made an omelet...

Re: Hobo Stove with a bonus...

Then I decided that it was to tall and took to long to warn up to prime the jets...

Ver. 1.3

This one I used a thumb tack to make the jets and only notched the bottom of the inner lining... I tried with just the 5 holes on top, but that didn't work... Ended up cutting it out and it worked way better than both the others...

I played with eggs so the next step had to be bacon...

Well, I took it to the next level... Used almost 1 1/2 oz. of fuel(denatured alcohol) and boiled an egg... Only took 5 mins to boil and cooked the egg for 15 mins... It still burned for almost 10 mins after removing the jar...

What do you do with a boiled egg??? Deviled eggs of course...

I homeschooled my kids from the 4th grade thru High School. We used the "unschooling method" so we had a lot of leeway in what we did. Unschooling uses lots of things as teaching materieals. Mother Earth News was a good magazine for us to use in "school". As part of "Science", the girls built a solar cooker out of a cardboard box, aluminum foil and a scrap piece of glass. They cooked hot dogs for their lunch on it. Experiments like that really stuck with them. Given an option that is interesting, kids can be weaned from the "boob tube". At least it was with my kids.

Re: Hobo Stove with a bonus...

My daughter and me built a solar cooker just like the one your talking about 6 years ago for a science project... Worked great, we made cupcakes...

Needless to say, she got and A+ and was voted the best project in the school... The cooker was impressive, but the step by step write up is what sent it over the top...

Re: Hobo Stove with a bonus...

Actually I made a new one out of some of the kids apple juice cans... Worked great... Just as good as the one that hard boiled the egg...

Then I threw on a 6oz. tenderloin... A little salt and pepper and cooked it for 4 minutes per side...

Here's a tip for you, finish it off with some butter... You'll notice that familiar flavor that you get from a really great steak at a Steakhouse... It turned out perfect, one of the best steaks I've ever eaten...

Backwoods Home suggests using wide cans from Foster's Lager. Emptying them is a fringe benefit.
And they advise that dry gas is an easy-to-obtain source of alcohol for fuel.

That steak was still red in the middle... Cooked to perfection... I'm known for how good my steaks are in these parts...

Haven't tried Heet yet, I'm gonna pick some up to play around with though...

Re: Hobo Stove with a bonus...

Four minutes per side is way too long for steak. Topping steak with REAL butter is how you do it. Get the pan (well seasoned cast iron) smoking hot, flip the steak in and flip it over ASAP. MMMMMM! Meat! I love a rare steak! You can keep the veggies!

Re: Hobo Stove with a bonus...

My wife likes a 5 min per side steak...

I'm between 3:30 and 4 min...

My dad comes over and it's a 2min per side for him...

I always let my steaks get up to room temp before cooking...

And I can't stress enough about salt and pepper... Those are the only two things that should ever go on a steak to season it...

Seeing as we are picking on the poor guy for his cooking ways....NEVER use teflon. Cast iron only, Teflon is bad stuff.

Just sayin of course.

Re: Hobo Stove with a bonus...

That was the only 6" pan I had...

I did pick up a neat little 6" stainless pot w/ lid at the thrift store today for $1...

Didn't find any small cast iron though...

I'm looking around for any 6" cast iron that I can find... Used of course...

Re: Hobo Stove with a bonus...

So, I've worked on a few designs...

This one has a hole that you use to fill under the penny, then drop the penny on the hole when you light it... It has to be primed to warm the fuel to a vapor...

It works better with more/smaller holes...

Then I started working on ideas for pot stand/wind shield...

This was to heavy and bulky...

This was just to difficult to build effectively...

Then I started playing around with some wire...

Tried using rivets...

This worked pretty good...

This worked great for the small stove...

Then I saw a design on the net and went from there... A sink strainer(97 cents at Walmart) and some peg board hooks... Breaks down real easy and holds a pot or can really well...

Haven't cooked anything with the last version... The will determine if it becomes part of the cook system...

Gonna build a Heiny Pot today and start putting together a fully contained cook system...

Re: Hobo Stove with a bonus...

For cast iron I'm partial to Lodge. I have one large Griswold skillet (my fav), and one 8 inch plus 4 of the "one egg" skillets. All well seasoned.
http://www.lodgemfg.com/

If you are ever in the area... On I24 in TN, between Nashville and Chattanooga is a little town called South Pittsburg (I24 Exit 152) where Lodge Mfg is located. They have a factory store (inspect the cast iron closely if you are buying seconds... the cheap stuff). GREAT prices. Lodge has very few factory stores (they used to only have the one). Luckily for me, I used to live near S. Pittsburg. (Whitwell in Marion County... same county)

http://www.lodgemfg.com/factory-stores.asp#

BTW, The Kimball Super WalMart/Cracker Barrel (Exit 152) allows overnight parking... drive car into S. Pitts as they have "beautified" the roads and they are a PITA for big trucks/Buses/RVs. Two Exits South on I24 will be an exit with a big fireworks place between the East/West lanes of the interstate (exit 154). (before you cross the Nickajack bridge if going towards Chattanooga). At that exit is a TVA campground (Shellmound on southside... DUMP STATION has a fee for non-campers... accepts skoolies... have lots of water hose to hook up to the water and LONG extension cords to hook up to the electric) as well as the Marion county Park/Campground (N side of interstate... also accepts skoolies). I prefer the TVA campground. Fills up on weekends, empty during the week. Ditto Marion County Park. We stayed in Shellmound for a week when we packed up our house in Whitwell.

http://www.tva.gov/river/recreation/....htm#nickajack I think it is open year round.
